외르에루아르주에 있는 도시 샤토됭은 암석 노출부에 건설되어 있다. 그래서 매우 일찍이 군사 방어 전략 요충지가 되었다.


12세기까지만 해도 이 도시의 성에는 오늘날에도 존재하는 커다란 탑 밖에 없었다.


오늘날의 성 건물 일부를 건설한 이는 쟌다르크의 전우로 유명한 뒤누아였다.


그는 오를레앙 왕자(샤를 6세 왕의 둘째 아들에게 주어진 칭호)의 서자(庶子)로 태어났다.


원래 그의 본명은 쟝 도를레앙이며, 뒤누아는 그에게 주어진 백작령의 명칭에서 따온 별명이다.

그는 백년전쟁 당시에 전쟁 포로로 수용되어 있었던 형 샤를 도를레앙(차기 루이 12세)의 석방에 일조한 것에 대한 감사의 표시로써 샤토됭 성을 상속받았다.

 
그는 성탑 옆에 예배당이 딸린 건물 하나를 건설함으로써 이 성을 자신의 명성에 걸맞는 저택으로 만들었다.

그 후 그의 아들과 손자들과 후손들이 또다른 건물 하나를 건설하였다.


1694년에 뒤누아 가문의 대가 끊기고, 상속인들은 성을 방치해 둔채 떠나버린다.1723년에 성에 은신해있던 마을 사람들이 저지른 큰 화재로 인하여 성이 손상되었고, 1815년에는 프로이센 왕국인들에 의하여 큰 피해를 입었고, 1870년에도 프로이센 왕국인들의 폭격으로 인해 결국 파괴되기에 이르렀다.

1938년에 정부가 상속인들 소유였던 성을 매입하여 복원을 시작하였고, 오늘날에도 계속 진행되고 있다.

Châteaudun est construit sur un éperon rocheux, Il devient donc très tôt une point stratégique de défense.


Du château, il n'y avait au 12è siècle que la grosse tour qui existe encore aujourd'hui. C'est le célèbre compagnon de Jeanne d'arc, Dunois qui en fit, en partie, ce qu'il est aujourd'hui. Fils illégitime du prince d'Orléans (titre donné au second fils du roi).

Jean d'Orléans dit « Dunois » du nom du comté qui lui a été donné, reçoit le château de Châteaudun en remerciement de sa participation à la libération de son frère Charles d'Orléans (le futur Louis XII). Il en fait une demeure digne de sa notoriété en construisant une aile à coté de la tour et une chapelle. Son fils et ses petits fils et leur descendance construiront la seconde aile.


L'extinction de la famille en 1694 marqua le début du déclin du château. Les héritiers le laisse à l'abandon. Il est endommagé lors du grand incendie de 1723 par les villageois qui s'y réfugièrent, puis fut dévasté par les prussiens en 1815 et enfin ruiné par les bombardement, toujours prussiens de 1870.


C'est en 1938 que l'état le sauve en le rachetant aux héritiers et commence la restauration qui se poursuit encore aujourd'hui.

Châteaudun is built on a rocky outcrop, it becomes very soon a strategic point of defense.
